Selston Parish and the 1984-85 Miners Strike
The project aims to look at the effects of the 1984-85 Miners Strike in and around the Parish of Selston, Nottinghamshire. The twenty-fifth anniversary of the start of the strike is in early March 2009. The role of the Nottinghamshire Miners in the dispute was controversial and the majority of the counties miners refused to join what they considered an “undemocratic strike”.
Ironically the dispute happened as deep mining was due to come to an end in the two collieries around Selston Parish. Both Moorgreen Colliery near Eastwood and the Pye Hill Complex had been identified for closure in the early 1980’s because of exhaustion of economic reserves. Yet the majority of miners at these two collieries still reacted strongly against the way the strike was conducted. Pye Hill No. 1 NUM Branch conducted the legal action that got the strike declared illegal in Nottinghamshire in May 1984.

Currently a booklet is being compiled which tells the story of the main events in the dispute in and around Selston. It is hoped this will be ready for sometime in March 2009. A DVD telling the story of the Selston Parish miners part in the dispute is also being planned.
Heritage Radio, Radio Salistune's Community Radio, goes on air for a week from Saturday 28th March 2009. During the weeks broadcast it is planned to record local peoples memories from the strike and the subsequent effects for Selston Parish. The memories will be wide ranging, and not necessarily just from miners employed in the local coal industry.
